Education is training students functionally and academically. Industry wants employees who are ready to hit the ground running. Small businesses do not have the resources to devote time to enhancing the skills that emergent students from full time education have. A bridge between these two is therefore required where industry requirements are recognised and the skills of selected students specifically incubated to meet them, resulting in more opportunities for employability and entrepreneurship.

The SMILE training project worked very well. Organised via the Belfast Digital Media Growth Initiative and delivered by BIFHE. BIFHE asked us what type of training we wanted the consensus was for intensive short courses over days not weeks in certain skills. The course I went on was very good - pitched at the right level.

I have met with Chris Murphy and Ian Fleming from the UU IMD course and we are seriously discussing the idea of sponsoring/mentoring the right people through a large part of their course. We would be involved in choosing them (and them choosing us) - and that way, working together, it helps them learn, and helps up mould a very employable member of staff.
